How come men never need lip balm? I don’t care about the tricks that will blow his mind, Cosmo, just solve this chapped-lipped mystery.
Anyway, my need for lip balms has resulted in a hefty arsenal – there’s one in every handbag, every drawer, every coat pocket. I stock up on my favourites every winter, and thought I’d run through what I like about ’em, in case you’re on the hunt too.
Nuxe Reve De Miel Lip Balm, €11. 50, has been a favourite of mine for a few years. The pot pictured is a spruced-up edition, celebrating 20 years in production, but the scent, flavour and formulation are unchanged.
At first, its texture is jarring. It doesn’t have the slip that other balms have, nor does it add shine. It’s matte and has grains that dissolve after being rubbed in. There’s no immediate soothing effect.
It sounds weird, but when this starts working, it starts working hard. After about an hour, it’s totally soaked into my lips and any feeling of dryness is gone. You don’t have to reapply this with any frequency. On an average day, I top this up just once or twice.
I’ve had a hard time finding this in chemists. It’s stocked in most, but seems to fly off the shelves. If you want it, your best bet is a department store or, for a few eurobux cheaper, on Cloud10Beauty.
Maybelline Go Electro, €3.99, are the newest addition to the Baby Lips range. They’re not the most nourishing of the bunch, but are perfect for using when you’re out and about.
The stick applicator is hygienic and they’re not so thick or sticky that you’ll ruin your makeup from the lips down. Also, I don’t mind reapplying because the tastes are actually nice – subtle, but not synthetic or saccharine.
These are stocked in Boots and in most Penneys, alongside the originals.
La Roche Posay Cicaplast Lips, €6.5o, hydrates quickly and thoroughly. For lips that are very chapped, sore and cracked, this is your only man. It’s very glossy, so, unless my lips are so torn up that I stop caring, I only apply this when I’m at home.
Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Lip Balm, €2.69, is cheap as chips and twice as nice. It’s creamy rather than greasy, so I apply this whenever I like. It’s soothing, provides hydration that lasts and tastes like chocolate. I’m never without a tube!
That’s my lot! Any more recommendations?
