Hate Topshop, Love Highlighter in Crescent Moon: Review + Swatches

Lorraine_Haigney 10th October 2013

A good highlighter is the difference between me looking like I’ve not slept, which is often the case, and me looking like beauty-therapist elves visited me in my sleep. I ventured into the cut-out-midriff depths of Topshop, the student Mecca where notions that you’re a size small and healthy bank balances go to die.

I usually flounce back out quickly, getting very pearl-clutchy about how all of clothes are made with gaping cut-outs across the midriff, but this was a different day. This was the day I slid my finger across Topshop’s powder highlighter in Crescent Moon.

It felt like, if I applied pressure, my finger would sink through the powder, such was its light, buttery texture.  It blends on with the ease and smoothness of a gel or liquid product. It almost melts into skin as is picked up very easily by bristles, so take care to apply with a light hand.

I had a garish block of shimmer from cheek to brow when I used this with as much gusto as I use for other highlighters. Consider yizzerselves warned, it’s full-on.

A final note on the texture, which is probably best compared to those beautiful Lauder gelée blushers, it’s not great for transport. Very creamy powders are more prone to smashing when in transit than the hulk during a mood swing.

Most obvious in direct sunlight, this translates to a delicate glow in photos and from a distance. If you’ve got visible pores (like me, sadface), use a refining primer. Shimmer makes texture issues look like TEXTURE ISSUES.

In terms of shade, this has mass appeal. Golden tones are matched with a silvery shimmer, neutralising the overall colour and broadening the wearability for both cool and warm skintones.

So yes, as much as Topshop annoy me with its sterling to eurobux conversions and bumless-shorts, I’ll admit it’s come good with Crescent Moon. At snip at €14.99, I’ll be happy to suffer the Grafton street store for this.

Gorgeous face on you!! Delighted you managed to find it, I’ve been thinking about it ever since you mentioned it but went with RiRi’s Diamonds as my new highlighter splurge.
Definitely with you on the Topshop note though – great makeup, gick conversions.

You could always buy it on the website. Might save a few quid if you pick up a blush (or two) x

Your skin looks flawless and creamy and glowy. What foundation/concealer are you wearing? Did you apply the highlighter after foundation/power?

It’s the Happy Light Bourjois one that I reviewed earlier in the week. Really like it – can assure you that my skin is not as clear as it appears in pictures, have just been scowling in a magnifying mirror.

I applied Smashbox powder (also reviewed!) before highlighter, just so I wouldn’t displace it.

You look gorgeous in the pics L. But there is not much that will get me to set foot into top shop. I am afeared they will escort me out…

I know it – at least Bourjois are closer than the likes of Benefit – 34 quid for a boxed blush! It’s CARDBOARD, lads! Calm yourselves.

Understand completely the thin line between pretty shimmer and crater like pores, mine are absolute divils but I’m finding a good primer helps like you said!
